Lemuel Haynes (1753-1833) was a Revolutionary War veteran of mixed-race parentage. He was the first Black man in the US to be ordained as a credentialed minister in a Protestant church. He was born in West Hartford CT and led a Congregational congregation in Rutland VT for three decades. Haynes was active in the anti-colonization movement, arguing that Black Americans were due the same rights under the Constitution as other Americans. He was a leading figure in the early Abolitionist movement, which caught fire nationally around the time of his death at age 80. SCARCE.
