This 1924 edition of Darwin i ego uchenie (Darwin and His Teaching) is by Kliment Arkadievich Timiryazev (1843- 1920), a distinguished Russian botanist, physiologist and one of the most influential popularisers of Darwinism in the late Imperial and early Soviet periods. Trained in natura…l sciences in St Petersburg and later associated with Moscow University, Timiryazev devoted much of his career to defending and explaining evolutionary theory to a broad readership. His lectures and essays played a central role in shaping Russian public understanding of Darwin s work, and he became known for his energetic, sometimes combative advocacy of scientific reasoning and materialist approaches to biology. This volume presents a concise and accessible account of Darwin s life, the development of his ideas, and the scientific significance of natural selection. Written with Timiryazev s characteristic clarity and polemical edge, the book situates Darwinism within wider debates about biology, social thought and the direction of scientific progress. It also reflects the early Soviet state s interest in promoting scientifically grounded explanations of nature and society, particularly during the cultural ferment of the 1920s. The cover is a striking example of early Soviet graphic design. Its bold sans-serif lettering, heavy vertical bars of red and black, and simplified emblem of an open book echo the emerging Constructivist aesthetic: functional, pared-back and deliberately modern. The layout is asymmetrical yet disciplined, typical of the period s attempt to break with pre-Revolutionary ornament while still maintaining clarity and authority. The paper is characteristic of early-1920s production modest but serviceable and the large format gives the pamphlet a purposeful, almost poster-like presence. This edition is a representative piece of Soviet scientific publishing from the decade in which evolution, propaganda and modern design briefly shared the same page. Cover repair, traces of moisture, occasional spots, but overall good for this era.
