Howard ("Cowboy Jack") Thorp (1867-1940) is best known for his cowboy song collections and for his composition, 'Little Joe, the Wrangler,' but he also wrote many descriptions of cowboys and ranch life and collected stories, legends, songs, and customs of the Southwest. The accounts of cattle culture, lost mines, local characters, and outlaws in this collection are previously unpublished manuscripts submitted to the New Mexico Federal Writers' Project between 1936 and 1939.

Cattleman Thorp spent some 50 years riding the range; his original publication represents the first systematic effort to track down western cowboy songs and poems and western songs. 346 pages with lexicon, bibliography and index of titles.
