Half-title, 901pp., [17]pp. publisher's ads. plants drawn from nature by Henderson and engraved on wood by Thomas Bewick, who brought the art of engraving on wood back into popularity. His wood engravings of birds and animals were exquisite. Wood engravings were also less expensive than those by copper plate. One of his most famous works was A General History of Quadrupeds published in 1790. He was also known to use his fingerprint below his name, the present work does not have one. A very nice copy bound in full calf, early rebacking with old gilt decorated spine laid down, marbled endpapers, Light pencil notes to front free endpaper, previous owner's name to upper corner of title page dated 1863, text is very clean with just a hint of toning.
