Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very nice ex lib copy complete with Dust Jacket of this very scarce account of General Sir Walter Norris Congreve V.C. and Captain and Brevet Major William La Touche Congreve V.C. It is an account of the services of Father and Son who both served in the Rifle Brigade and who both became recipients of the Victoria Cross. Sir Walter Congreve served in South Africa and during the Great War. He was on Lord Kitcheners staff during the South African War and then in the First World War was Commander of the 6th Division and then Corps Commander of the X111 Corps. In 1919 he went to Palestine and then was appointed G.O.C. Egypt and Palestine. His last appointment was as Governor of Malta in 1925. Billy Congreve served in the First World War with the Rifle Brigade and after serving as ADC to successive commanders of 3rd Division he was made G.S.O.3 of the Division and then on December 8th 1915 was made Brigade Major of the 76th Infantry Brigade .He was awarded the M.C. in 1915 for his gallantry at Hooge , The D.S.O. in 1916 for his single handed capture of 72 Germans at the Bluff. He final award was a posthumous Victoria Cross for his continuous acts of Gallantry and endurance during the Battel of the Somme. This ex Lib book has a very clean and virtually complete Dust Jacket is bright and clean with only very minor flaws Externally the front block has a couple of minor tape residue marks and has some slight wear at the bottom rear edge. There is a sale stamp and some tape residue on the inner front board. There are a couple of stamps on the publication date page. There is no apparent foxing and the book is clean and bright internally. Photos illustrate all these condition points.

Condition: Good. aquatint plates & engraved plates (56 includes portrait + 2 engraved pictorial exta titlepages] + 29 vignettes by Bryant et al. 2 volumes. Quarto half calf blind-tooled on 4 faux bands gilt + 2 contrasting labels to each volume (some splits to head and foot of spine but covers well attached /edges bit worn) lxvi +108pp + [6p=index] ; xii +260pp +[8pp =index& plate list] + 4pp of sporting books published. 2 plates and the titlepage vignette neatly handcoulored. Last plate in vol.1 is slightly soiled and wrinkled and was sewn in at an angle thus margins are not all equal. There is a brown stain to the gutter side at the front of volume one diminishing within the preliminaries but still affects the gutter margin of the first 24 pages but never encroaching on any of the actual plates except for the portrait and the engraved titlepage. There is rather less foxing/dusting than usual with the paper in crisp neat condition and there are MANY FINE FOLDING AQUATINT VIEWS & interesting hunting & shooting observations. Also nice vignettes [the final one in vol 2 printed upside down} actually several more than are listed in the vignette list. Some scattered plates in vol.2 have some pale foxing but most plates are free of any foxing. A well illustrated set.* Thomas Thornton was a famous sportsman of the Napoleonic Era, on his visits to France he presented Napoleon with a pair of Durs Egg pistols. 2 volumes. Hardcover.
