Michael Thonet (1796-1871) hatte um 1830 in Boppard am Rhein begonnen, mit dem Biegen von Holz zu experimentieren. 1842 kam er auf den Rat des österreichischen Staatskanzlers Clemens Fürst Metternich aus dem Rheinland nach Wien und ließ sein Bugholzverfahren patentieren. Fasziniert von dem neuen Verfahren beauftragte Peter Hubert Desvignes, der Architekt des Fürsten Liechtenstein, Thonet - als Subunternehmer des Wiener Tischlermeisters Carl Leistler - mit der Anfertigung von Stühlen für das Stadtpalais Liechtenstein. 1849 richtete Michael Thonet in Wien-Gumpendorf eine eigene Werkstatt ein. 1851 präsentierte er seine Bugholzmöbel mit großem Erfolg bei der ersten Weltausstellung im Londoner Kristallpalast. 1853 gründet er schließlich mit seinen fünf Söhnen die Firma "Gebrüder Thonet". Aus der Wiener Werkstatt sollte bald ein Industrieunternehmen mit Weltgeltung werden.
