Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Unknown. Two titles/volumes in one book: 186pp; 195pp. Illustrated with 16 illustrations from original designs by Darley (12 in the first volume/title and 4 in the second). Red cloth hardcover with black and gold embossed designs on front board and spine. Gilt title and illustration on spine. There are separate dates for each title. The first title is: "MAJOR JONES' CHRONICLES OF PINEVILLE: EMBRACING SKETCHES OF GEORGIA SCENES, INCIDENTS, AND CHARACTERS WITH TWELVE ILLUSTRATIONS FROM ORIGINAL DESIGNS BY DARLEY" (Title age with 1843 date and preface with 1844). The second title is: POLLY PESBLOSSOM'S WEDDING; AND OTHER TALES. EDITED BY T.A. BURKE, ESQ. WITH NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS (Actually 4). Copyright page dated 1851. There is a publishers error. The page which starts "The Chronicles of Pineville" is numbered 11 and verso is 12 then the next page is numbered 1 and then so on. The second book in the volume is missing the page numbers 11 and 12 but there is actually no text missing. So just a numbering problem but all is still COMPLETE. Book is a bit offset and gently discolored from normal handling over the years. Binding is still complete, and clean inside, and tight. Printed medallion of front/rear covers states: "PETERSON'S ILLUSTRATED UNIFORM EDITION OF HUMEROUS AMERICAN WORKS".…

William Tappan Thompson (1812-1882) was an American author who, in addition to writing novels, co-founded and edited the Daily Morning News. Through that paper, he supported the Confederacy and wrote pieces that promoted white supremacy, suggesting that the confederate flag would "rank among the proudest ensigns of the nations" and be recognized as "The White Man's Flag." This novel is his most famous work, an epistolary fiction. The illustrations reflect nineteenth-century American perceptions of the racial binary (and hierarchy) that Thompson endorsed. An excellent historical document demonstrating the politics of race and white supremacy in the history of American fiction. …
