Contact seller5-star sellerdj. First edition, first printing. 206 pp. 8.5" x 5.5" TRIP OF A LIFETIME Hunter S. Thompson's drug-soaked cult favorite exemplified a new era of journalism. In his dizzying riot against the American status quo, Thompson took the opportunity to road trip to Las Vegas, killing two birds with one stone: writing Sports Illustrated…captions and interviewing Chicano activist Oscar Zeta Acosta. The two men would have an experience unlike any other as they tripped through Sin City, sweeping away the hippie craze of the '60s and the structure of traditional news writing in favor of '70s cynicism and gonzo journalism. The novel-length manuscript was rejected by Sports Illustrated, received with enthusiasm by Rolling Stone, and published in a two-part series before its hardback publication solidified Thompson as the voice of late twentieth-century nonfiction. All it took was "two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a galaxy of multi-coloured uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls." Featuring Ralph Steadman's line drawings, this first edition is ready to transport you back to a Vegas hotel room, philosophizing and raging with one of the greatest unconventional minds. Slight lean, moderately sunned extremities light spots of soiling text block and board edges, very good copy in very good, gently toned dust jacket with touches of shelf wear, small tape shadow and shallow tide mark to verso, in mylar cover. Quarter black cloth over grey boards, in Ralph Steadman dust jacket ($5.95). Black and white illustrations by Ralph Steadman. (illustrator).

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition of the author's third book and hallmark of campaign journalism. Octavo, original black boards, illustrated by Ralph Steadman. Boldly signed on the half-title page by Hunter Thompson, Ralph Steadman and Jimmy Carter opposite the half-title page. Fine in a near fine first issue price-clipped dust jacket with the whit…e border around the photograph of Thompson and McGovern on the rear panel. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare and desirable. Forty years after its original publication, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 remains a cornerstone of American political journalism and one of the bestselling campaign books of all time. Hunter S. Thompson's searing account of the battle for the 1972 presidencyfrom the Democratic primaries to the eventual showdown between George McGovern and Richard Nixonis infused with the characteristic wit, intensity, and emotional engagement that made Thompson "the flamboyant apostle and avatar of gonzo journalism" (The New York Times). Hilarious, terrifying, insightful, and compulsively readable, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is an epic political adventure that captures the feel of the American democratic process better than any other book ever written. "Thompson should be recognized for contributing some of the clearest, most bracing and fearless analysis of the possibilities and failures of American democracy in the past century" (Chicago Tribune).

Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with the a touch of shelfwear. Illustrations by Ralph Steadman. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. An… exceptional signed example. The novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is based on two trips to Las Vegas, Nevada, that Hunter S. Thompson took with attorney and Chicano activist Oscar Zeta Acosta in March and April 1971. Thompson wrote that he concluded their March trip by spending some 36 hours alone in a hotel room "feverishly writing in my notebook" about his experiences. The genesis of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream is in that notebook. The book "cemented Mr. Thompson's place as a singular presence in American journalism or, as he once called himself, 'a connoisseur of edge work'" (New York Times). It was adapted into the 1998 film directed by Terry Gilliam, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro.
