First Edition
Hardcover. 1st Edition. First Edition. 12mo. Maroon cloth with embossed designs to covers and gilt lettering to spine. The voyage of Captain Thomas Crapo and his wife in a dory boat from New Bedford, Massachusetts, to England. Crapo and his wife achieved a great deal of fame because of a seven-week transatlanic crossing in a small dory. Crapo died several years later when he tried to repeat the effort by sailing from New Bedford to Cuba in a 9-foot dinghy. After his death at the turn of the century, his wife re-issued his autobiography. Though not noted on the title page, the re-issue is identified by Mrs. Crapo's mention of her late husband's demise. Having been left penniless at his death, she writes: "I am now solely depending on the result[ing sales] of the book 'Strange but True.'"Ê Near Fine. Staining to covers. Sunning to spine. Foxing to endpapers. Binding tight. Clean textblock.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a captivating glimpse into the life of Captain Thomas Crapo, a New Bedford whaler who braved the treacherous seas of the 19th century. Through his own words, the author recounts his adventures on the whaling ship *Marcia*, starting with his daring decision to run away from home and become a sailor at the tender age of fourteen. The book transports readers to the brutal yet exhilarating world of whaling, where perilous hunts for colossal sperm whales became a daily routine. The author vividly describes the challenges of navigating treacherous seas, enduring harsh weather, and facing down the ever-present danger of the mighty whales. The book provides a rare and intimate view of life on board a whaling ship, detailing the daily routines, the hardships endured, and the camaraderie forged between the sailors. Beyond the thrill of adventure, the book explores themes of human resilience, the bonds of brotherhood forged in the face of adversity, and the constant struggle against the elements.
