De Romeinse stadhouder Pilatus liet boven het kruis waar Jezus van Nazaret aan werd vastgenageld, een plankje aanbrengen waarop in drie talen de reden stond vermeld voor Jezus' veroordeling. In de kerk Sante Croce in Gerusalemme te Rome wordt een houten fragment bewaard dat een deel van dit kruisopschrift zou zijn. Tot nu toe is daar weinig aandacht aan besteed, maar de auteurs stellen dat het hier om een authentiek stuk gaat. Dit is een gewaagde stelling, maar schrikken niet terug voor het verkondigen van controversiele meningen. De tekst op het houten fragment vertoont merkwaardige trekjes; zo zijn de Griekse en Latijnse tekst van rechts naar links geschreven, evenals het bijna geheel verloren gegane Hebreeuwse (of Aramese) opschrift. De bespreking van de tekst is uitvoerig en redelijk technisch, waarbij het onhandig is dat zowel de Griekse als de Hebreeuwse letters vaak verkeerd zijn weergegeven (foutje bij de vertaling?). De tekst en de legendarische ontdekking ervan door keizerin Helena worden in een brede context geplaatst. Het is de vraag of de these van de auteurs in wetenschappelijke kring zal worden aanvaard.
