A good hardcover overall with general shelf wear and moderate soiling to the cover cloth, foxing to the back panel; front hinge cracked but binding solid, slight damp stain at top margins (does not affect text), paper moderately yellowed with light scattered foxing. Without dust jacket. No publication date but circa 1880. An 'International Series' edition.

His best remembered works are TOUSSAINT (1840); DER VOIGT VON SYLT (published in two volumesin 1851); and AFRAJA, his most famous and best loved tale. (i-ii) half-tile and blank, (i)-iv title & translator's preface, (13)-571pp plus 6p publisher'scatalog. 12mo (circa 5 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" tall. Handsomely newly rebound by Paul Sawyer in burgundy Ormond quarter calf and gray cloth. Spinehandsomely stamped with gilt lettering and decoration. New endpapers. Publisher's original top edge tinted dull red with other edges plain.Protected in a removable, clear archival jacket. Complete, owner's names entered on half-title, unmarked and clean. New binding.

Bookseller's ticket on pastedown. Old hand signature of C.E. Perkins on fly. Title page torn at top edge with missing segment. Textblock appears to have been cut incorrectly by the binder. Top edge is lopsided. Interior lightly toned with minor instances of foxing. Free of known markings. Binding intact. Please see photos. Theodor Mugge (1802-1861) was a German author and liberal activist. This is one of several works that had been translated into English and published numerous times.
