Reprinted The Notable Trials Library, [1992]. Quarter-calf, gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, edges gilt, ribbon marker. Internally clean. A fine copy. $15. * The dramatic true story of a…mother's worst nightmare and the murder trial that shocked Australia. On a camping trip at Ayer's Rock, the Chamberlain family's infant daughter disappeared in the middle of the night. Her distraught mother, Lindy, claimed she saw a dingo carry her off into the Australian outback. Two years later, their tragedy worsened when, without a murder weapon, a body, or even a motive, a jury convicted Lindy Chamberlain of killing her own daughter. The public cheered. John Bryson, a trial lawyer and award-winning journalist, deconstructs the factors that led to a seemingly reasonless incarceration and the public attitude that demanded it. With this book, he began to sway popular opinion in the Chamberlains' favor by discussing the failures on the part of the police, forensics team, and press. (Librarything). The Notable Trials Library, 1992. (illustrator).

Viking Penguin Inc., [1987]. xiv, 431 pp. With New Introduction by Alan M.Dershowitz. Reprinted The Notable Trials Library, 1996. Quarter calf over cloth, decorative gilt stamping, raised bands, all edges g…ilt, marbled endpapers, ribbon marker. Water stain to bottom text block edge, otherwise internally clean. A fine copy. $15. * Jacob Abrams et al. v. United States is the landmark Supreme Court case in the definition of free speech. Although the 1918 conviction of four Russian Jewish anarchists-for distributing leaflets protesting America's intervention in the Russian revolution-was upheld, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes's dissenting opinion (with Justice Louis Brandeis) concerning "clear and present danger" has proved the touchstone of almost all subsequent First Amendment theory and litigation. In Fighting Faiths, Richard Polenberg explores the causes and characters of this dramatic episode in American history. He traces the Jewish immigrant experience, the lives of the convicted anarchists before and after the trials, the careers of the major players in the court cases-men such as Holmes, defense attorney Harry Weinberger, Southern Judge Henry DeLamar Clayton, Jr., and the young J. Edgar Hoover-and the effects of this important case on present-day First Amendment rights. (Amazon). The Notable Trials Library, 1996. (illustrator).

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. In 1682, Nathaniel Thompson, William Pain, and John Farwell, printers and publishers associated with The Loyal Protestant Intelligence were tried at the Guildhall of London for libel, accused of disseminating letters and articles asserting that Sir Edmundbury Godfrey had died by suicide rather than murder.…Godfrey's mysterious death in 1678 had been a catalyst for the Popish Plot hysteria, widely believed to be the work of Catholic conspirators. By challenging this narrative, Thompson and his associates were seen as undermining the legitimacy of the Plot and casting doubt on the Protestant cause. The prosecution focused on their role in printing and circulating politically charged material that contradicted the official account and inflamed public tensions. The trial reflects the fraught intersection of journalism, propaganda, and state power in Restoration England, where the printed word could be as dangerous as any weapon. 20 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. In 1626, Parliament launched proceedings against three influential royal advisors; the Duke of Buckingham, the Earl of Bristol, and Lord Conway, accusing them of high crimes that epitomized the growing tension between crown and commons. Buckingham, chief favourite of Charles I, faced charges of corruption,…military incompetence, and monopolizing patronage. Bristol was targeted for diplomatic missteps during the failed Spanish Match negotiations, while Conway, a quieter but key figure, was implicated by association and poor counsel. Far from a mere legal reckoning, these proceedings signified Parliament's deepening resistance to unaccountable royal power, marking a flashpoint in the contest for constitutional balance during the early Stuart era. 91 pages, printed in double columns. Extracted from the monumental Complete Collection of State Trials , a cornerstone of British legal and political history, this report documents proceedings involving treason, sedition, and other pivotal offences. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political dis…course, the series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, several pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper.
