VG copy save for three pinholes in the first page of the issue. [++] In his experiments in 1928 with G.H. Cameron (following several years of other work on the origins of cosmic rays) Millikan (who coined the term "cosmic rays" in 1925 though the high-energy particles themselves were discovered in 1912 by Victor Hess) measured the charge of cosmic rays and their affect o the atmosphere and theorized that they were high-energy particles with origins outside the solar system, rather than being of solar origin. (Hess received the 1936 Nobel Physics for this discovery (shared with C.D. Anderson, who discovered the positron) while Millikan received the Physics prize in in 1923 for his work on the elementary charge of electricity and on the photoelectric effect.) $150.

Walsham's entry in Munk's Roll describes him as 'a pioneer of radiology of the chest, and his book, written in collaboration with Harrison Orton, 'Roentgen Rays in the Diagnosis of the Diseases of the Chest' (1906), was the first to deal with the subject in English. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged. Difficul…t to decipher, possibly because Walsham 'paid dearly for his work in the loss of several fingers'. Addressed to 'Dear Madam', and explaining that Walsham and a named colleague whom the named patient had consulted are 'strongly of the opinion that perfect rest for the eye is absolutely essential for the remainder of the week'. The patient is 'exceedingly anxious' to perform a named part in a play, and this should be possible, 'as she feels confident that she will be able to the part satisfactorily in that time. Mrs. K is forbidden to write or read.'.

First printing of the paper in which Bragg discloses the corpuscular nature of Gamma- and X-…Rays."Considering gamma and X rays to be of the same nature, he declared the evidence in favor of the ether pulse theory to be "overrated," and emphasized that theory was unable to account for the large quantity of energy and momentum that remained in the ray regardless of the distance from its source, and that could all be delivered to a single electron. During the following five years Bragg backed off somewhat from this concrete model of the gamma ray, emphasizing its "corpuscular" rather than its "material" nature. but did not abandon the general concept of an electron-with-its-charge-neutralized until after the discovery of X-ray diffraction in 1912. Thus, initially without being aware of the views of Einstein and Stark, Bragg became the first, and remained the foremost, English-language advocate of a view of X rays that stressed their "quantal" properties. First printing of an importent paper in the…history of photochemistry as he here discovered some effects of coloured rays of the solar spectrum."Edmund Becquerel seems to be the first person to observe, in 1840 (in the paper offered), that the latent daguerreotype image which had been underexposed could be intensified if re-exposed to the yellow and red rays of the spectrum and then developed with mercury. Explaining this phenomenon, Becquerel called the yellow-red continuing rays ("rayon continuateurs") in contrast to the primary rays, which exicited or produced the light image and which he called exiciting rays ("rayons excitateurs"). They are dependent on the wave lenght of the light."(Eder "History of Photography", pp. 265 ff.)"Becquerel was an early experimenter in photography. In 1840 he discovered that the silver halides, natively insensitive to red and yellow light, became sensitive to that part of the spectrum in proportion to their exposure to blue, violet and ultraviolet light, allowing Daguerreotypes and other photographic materials to be developed by bathing in strong red or yellow light rather than by chemical treatment. The firstpart of the paper conatins a description of observations on the cathode rays, made with a Lenard Tube, in which the cathode rays passed through an aluminium window into an extension of the tube where as high a rarefaction as possible was maintained. The magnetic and electrostatic deflexions of a narrow cathode stream were observed and Wien concludes that it is proved by his investigation that the cathode rays which pass through the windoww carry with them strong negative charges."(Magie "Souce Book in Physics", p. 597 ff.).Wien was awarded the 1911 Nobel Prize for physics for his discoveries regarding laws governing the radiation of heat.

First apperance of Villard's two papers in which he announced and described the discovery of a new type of radiation more powerfull and penetrating than alpha-and beta rays. The new type of rays was named by Rutherford as gammarays."His (Villard)experiments in radioactivity led to the unexpected discovery of gamma rays in 1900. Villard recognized them as being different from x rays because the gamma rays had a much greater penetrating depth. He had discovered they were emitted from radioactive substances and were not affected by electric or magnetic fields. These came to be called gamma rays by another scientist, Ernest Rutherford. It wasn't until 1914 that Rutherford showed that they were a form of electromagnetic (EM) like light only with a much shorter wavelength than x rays. Now we know that gamma rays are a form of EM radiation similar to x rays. Gamma rays tend to have a higher energy and a shorter wavelength than x rays do. However, the dividing line between these two forms of radiation is not clearly defined. Scientists typically apply the term gamma ray to EM radiation with energies above several hundred thousand electron volts." First prin…ting of Ritter's announcement of his discovery of ultraviolet light in a halfpage letter addressed to Gilbert's Annalen. With that discovery, it became clear that visible light represents no more than a fraction of a continous spectrum.A year earlier, in 1800, William Herschel discovered infrared light. This was the first time that a form of light beyond visible light had been detected. After hearing about Herschel's discovery of an invisible form of light beyond the red portion of the spectrum, Ritter decided to conduct experiments to determine if invisible light existed beyond the violet end of the spectrum as well. He had heard that blue light caused a greater reaction in silver chloride than red light did. Ritter decided to measure the rate at which silver chloride reacted to the different colors of light. He directed sunlight through a glass prism to create a spectrum. He then placed silver chloride in each color of the spectrum and found that it showed little change in the red part of the spectrum, but darkened toward the violet end of the spectrum. Johann Ritter then decided to place silver chloride in the area just beyond the violet end of the spectrum, in a region where no sunlight was visible. The first two papers were printed the year before in "Münchener Sitzungsberichte", but finds their final form here and with the experimental confirmation by Laue and Tank.
