[RAILROADS]. First edition. 8vo. 8" X 9" color wrappers, folds to 4" x 9". 23 [1] pp. [including covers}, all diagrams throughout the booklet are in color and describe the many room designs to accommodate Pullman passengers. An uncommon brochure issued after George W. Bohannon became President of the company in 1958 to head-off the decline in passenger boardings through the 1950s as he aimed to increase passenger revenue. One of his more innovative ideas was the development of the "Slumbercoach" which was manufactured by The Budd Company. This coach was built originally for the Burlington Railroad as trainsets that replaced the original articulated Denver Zephyr trainsets. Orders were received for the innovative cars from both the Burlington and New York Central, but even the well-thought-out marketing efforts as featured in this booklet failed to stem the trend to air travel. Vertical center crease and covers lightly used else a very good tight copy.…

Photograph illustrations on the verso emphasize the advantages and sleekness of the first aluminum sleeping car in 1933, a streamlined car train in 1934 complete with bedroom suites and more in 1942. Near Fine with light wear to gilt and spots of soiling to front cover, faint small staining to lower edge of text block, toning to pages and an inked-over name on the preliminary leaf. A rare guidebook produced for the largely African-American staff of the Pullman Company. While not Pullman's first guide, this is the first with this title. Shortly after the Civil War, The Pullman Company became notable for hiring thousands of African American men-including many former slaves-to serve white passengers traveling across the country on the company's luxury railroad sleeping cars. Following meticulous rules and procedures as evident by those in this guidebook, these men became pillars of the African-American community who as a result of their training maintained the highest standards of personal and professional decorum. Though they were underpaid, overworked and endured never-ending racism on the job, the Pullman porters would eventually help to fuel the Great Migration, shape a new Black middle class and help launch the civil rights movement.…
