Born in London in 1928, Tilson worked as a carpenter and joiner. After National Service in the RAF, he studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He won the Rome Prize in 1955, and since then has spent much of his time in Italy. He has taught at important art schools in London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, New York and Hamburg, and is a popular exhibitor at the Royal Academy's annual Summer Exhibition. Gavin Turk (1967 -) is a British artist and one of the group known as the Young British Artists.
