Nelson Kingsley (????-1852) was a member of the California & New Haven Joint Stock Company. He is perhaps best-known for his 1849-1851 diary, reprinted here, in which he recorded his travels from New Haven, Connecticut to San Francisco, California aboard a ship that rounded Cape Horn. Kingsley also wrote about his travels in California where he tried his hand at gold mining and in the shipping business that ran between San Francisco and Sacramento on the Sacramento River. His personal account also details life in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Marysville. Kingsley wrote his last diary entry when he returned to New Haven in 1851. Frederick J. Teggart (1870-1946) was an Irish-American historian and social scientist whose specialization was the study of civilizations.
