Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 203 pages indexed. Map endpapers. Brown cloth boards with dark brown lettering and decorated cover. Almost every page is illustrated with color drawings, paintings and photographs. To the wild and unknown shores of a new world, came Europe's adventurers and dispossessed, saints and sinners, farmers and traders, poor hoping to get rich, and rich hoping to get richer. The people who followed Columbus were ill-equipped to start new lifes on a continent whose hazards and dimensions they knew only vaguely. A century of trial, often ending in failure, gave them experience in settling the newfound land. Contents in Ten Chapters: Island Triumphs, Bloody Florida, Settlers for a Season, Holding on in Virginia and Canada, Pious Plymouth, Lords Bretheren and Lords Calvert, Struggle Over Land, OUtposts and Missjions and Fur Posts on the Pacific. Edwards, Walter Meayers (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Condition: Dust Jacket has shelf wear, book is in excellent condition. In The Wild Shores: America's Beginnings, we experience both the triumph and the tragedy of the early settlements. William Bradford, leader of the Pilgrims, wrote of the joy the men and women felt when they reached Cape Cod and "set their feete on the firme and stable earth." But for the Pilgrims, as for so many others, the joy was short-lived: "What could they see but a hideous and desolate wilderness full of wild beats and willd men.and a mighty ocean.to seperate them from all the civill parts of the world." The first settlers endured "starving times" and saw many of their loved ones perish, but still they held on, praying for miracles. By 1763, the English flag flew over all the land east of the Mississippi, except for New Orleans. On the Pacific coast, Spaniards occupied California and the Russians held Alaska. The Spanish sought to spread Christianity among heathen aboriginals; the Russians set out to line their pockets with gold from the sale of precious pelts. But in the end it was hard work, rapidly developing skills, and the richness of the land that made it possible for a diverse people to forge a new nation that grew steadily in power and influence after winning its independence in 1776.
