But it well could have been. -Don't get me wrong. I actually enjoyed the book - that's why I gave it four stars. But Schredd's hypocrisy tro…ubled me on several levels. First of all, he hit the road without any serious preparation, expecting the world to accommodate him and advocating that others do the same. But the only reason he was able to wander around unemployed for the better part of a year was that plenty of other people were charitable with money, bicycle repairs, food, accommodations, and so forth. And the reason they were able to was that instead of bumming around on a bike, they were working for a living. -It's kind of like those few folks who surf the crowd at a concert. It only works because there are very few surfers and plenty of crowds. If enough people took Schredd's example, there wouldn't be anyone left to sponge off of. -Shredd presents himself as an open-minded life and lets live kind of guy. But his prejudices toward hunters, Christians, the military, and various other groups are pretty obvious. One particular story involved petty vandalism in a supermarket, perpetrated by a law officer. Hilarious. -Most of us have at one time or another had a friend who's always asking for favors, borrowing money, and imposing on us in one way or another. That's the picture I get here. For much of their trip, Shedd's (second) girlfriend was in horrible back pain, which could have been cured by a few chiropractor visits. But in never dawned on him to stop for a short while and earn a few bucks to pay for her treatment. Instead, they rode on with the hope that someone else would either donate or pay for the care she needed. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to spend an evening with the writer, quaffing beers and swapping tales. But I sense that with even a little more responsibility, he could have had just as much fun, see just as many sights, and endured far less pain and adversity."-Larry R.
