Maximus was a 2nd century A.D. Greek philosopher and rhetorician and the Dissertations his major work, a collection of 41 essays on philosophical, religious and other topics. Taylor (1758-1835) was a highly-regarded English translator, the first to accomplish the entire works of Plato and Aristotle; his Maximus translation first appeared in London in two volumes in 1804.…
