Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Illustrations by Blair Hughes-Stanton (illustrator). 1st Edition. The first National Mark recipe book was published in 1934, this is a cookery booklet, published in a different improved format in 1936. Beige soft covers. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of covers and spine, some slight overall yellowing, corners slightly bent, no price, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 128pp, illustrated. Published just before WWII, 'The National Mark' was a series of Government trademarks assuring quality and that the food concerned was British produced. This booklet explains the various quality control marks (mostly still in use today), and gives simple and easily explained recipes on a month by month basis. I tried the Cucumber Cream Soup (June), although I used slightly less butter and no egg than the recipe calls for, it was delicious. Ambrose Heath (born Francis Geoffrey Miller,1891-1969), was a journalist and food writer who wrote for 'The Times','The News Chronicle' and 'The Manchester Guardian', before becoming the food writer for 'The Morning Post'. Journalist, author and broadcaster Dorothy Cottington-Taylor (1891-1944), was Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute, which she led for 16 years, she made it a trusted source of accurate product reviews and dependable dishes in the UK. It also made her famous, a nationally known figure as she also used it as a platform to build her own brand, presenting radio programmes, promoting a wide range of products and taking on company directorships in the hospitality sector. Sadly she died towards the end of the War, at the young age of 53. A scarce and interesting book.
