He was hanged for her murder and he was the first murderer to be caught with the help of the newly developed telegraph. The implications of his death led to the 'Great Seal case' and a political crisis in 1861 between Governor Sir William Denison and Premier Charles Cowper who later resigned along with his entire ministry.

The Premier relinquished the seal and resigned to resolve the deadlock. The rest of his ministry also resigned. Eventually, the governor returned the seal and refused the ministry's resignation.
