"An Introduction to the World's Greatest" ain't books but rather a boxed set of five, 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl jazz LP records, World's Greatest Music Series WGM(S)-2A, "from the catalogue of Roulette Records Birdland Series," the vinyl very-good-plus (no real problems, but these records have been played), four of the five discs marked "Stereo," the box intact and "very good" with some edge rub and what's probably a sticker pull to bottom of rear panel. On the bright side, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis offer "Crazeology" and "Bird Feathers"; Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker bring us "School Days" and "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac"; Art Tatum offers "Dark Eyes"; the Stan Getz Quartet brings us "Hershey Bar"; we find Sonny Stitt with "Spinning" and "Hitsburg." Maynard Ferguson, Sarah Vaughan ("Stormy Weather") and Joe Williams each get a full disc to themselves, set of five now reduced from $12. For Maynard Ferguson fans we'll throw in OUR SECOND BOXED SET of two Roulette LPs, "The Maynard Ferguson Years," K-101, appear to be mono, very-good-plus vinyl in a "good" original 1965 box, including "Hip Twist," "Stella By Starlight," "Mambo La Mans" (sic), "The Party's Over," etc. -- that second boxed set being about a $4 value, the pair of boxed sets now reduced from $14.…

Not a book but a 10-inch, 33-1/3 rpm, "Microgroove Long Play (mono) Unbreakable Record," Brunswick BL 58013, near-mint vinyl in a very-good cardboard jacket with tape to bottom edge. Tiny Grimes and Slam Stewart join the celebrated piano-player (though Tatum always advised "Never play the piano! The piano plays itself!") on "I Ain't Got Nobody," "After You've Gone," "Deep Purple," "Honeysuckle Rose," "I Would Do Anything for You," and, of course that most memorable composition of George Gershwin and his lovely bride Ira, "I Got Rhythm." Vinylplatte 30 cm/78 UpM. Neues neutrales Lochcover. Platte mit deutlicheren Oberflächenspuren (darunter auch ein paar etwas tiefere Kratzer), aber im Ganzen noch ordentlich. Matrizen-Nrn. B44988#2JDB 20 und P44982#2 JDB 19. V-Discs, Abkürzung für Victory Disc (Schallplatten für den Sieg), waren Schallplatten der US-amerikanischen Streitkräfte während und kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, die von der Victor Talking Machine Company zwischen 1942-1948 eigens für die Truppen angefertigt (später schlossen sich weitere Labels dem Programm an) und diesen zur moralischen Stärkung übersandt wurden. Sie waren im Handel nicht erhältlich. Aufgenommen bzw. neu aufgelegt (teils in gekürzten Fassungen) wurde Musik aller Genres - Klassik, Unterhaltungsmusik, Jazz etc., teils auch unter Beifügung patriotischer Ansprachen von Präsident Roosevelt u.a. hochrangiger Politiker und Militärs. Es waren fast alle berühmten amerikanischen Musiker der Zeit vertreten, darunter klassische Musik mit Arturo Toscanini, Arthur Rubinstein, Nathan Milstein oder Jascha Heifetz etc. oder Unterhaltungsmusik und Jazz mit Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bluesmusiker wie Big Bill Broonzy, Josh White u.v.a. mehr. Es gibt ungefähr 900 verschiedene Aufnahmen. Der amerikanische Klaviervirtuose Art Tatum gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Pianisten und Erneuerer des Jazz, der zahlreiche Größen des Jazzpianos wie Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk oder Bud Powell beeinflußte. Oscar Peterson nannte ihn einmal den größten Jazzpianisten aller Zeiten. Fats Waller, von dem wiederum Tatum maßgeblich geprägt und inspiriert worden war, spielte einmal in einem Nachtclub als auch Tatum zugegen war und wandte sich dabei so an sein Publikum: "I just play the piano, but God is in the house tonight" und der Legende zufolge soll sogar der klassische Pianist Wladimir Horowitz von Tatums Spiel zu Tränen gerührt gewesen sein.…
