Bound in blind-stamped decorative black morocco with gilt titles to the spines. The Psalms have a separate title-page also dated 1841. All edges gilt and within a slip-case of black leather over card for ease… of carriage. Each has an owner's inscription "Eliza Smith February 23rd 1842" in ink on the front free end-paper. End-papers in cream. The contents are clean and very good for their age. A very nice example of early Victorian Anglicanism. UNCOMMON.

The New Version of the Psalms of David is dated 1738 and has 192 pages. Black morocco fine binding with ornate gilt frames and scrolls to the front…and back covers. Five raised bands to the spine with ornate gilt decoration in each compartment. Tiny gilt dentelles on the cover edges and inner-turn-ins, gilt page edges. With steel clasps. Condition very good, clasps lacking fold over hinges, corners spine edges and raised bands quite rubbed, pages generally very clean, just a few spots or marks here and there. The Book of Common Prayer has a lovely frontispiece engraving "St. Luke Chap XXII. Jesus comforted by an Angel" The Companion to the Altar has a lovely frontispiece engraving of The Last Supper.

Gill in 1772, The Book of Psalms printed in London by Richard Hett in 1776 and the companion or spiritual guide at the altar printed in Avemary-Lane for Bedwell Law not dated. Size 8.5" x 5.25". In very good condition,…corners and edges slightly rubbed, a little toning to pages, else contents clean and free from inscriptions. Black leather and gilt fine binding. The front and back covers are decorated with ornate thick floral gilt border and ornate gilt floral and scroll central motif. Five raised gilded bands to the spine with ornate gilt flowers, leaves and scrolls in each compartment. With gilt page edges, gilt hatching to the page edges and gilt leaves to the inner turn-ins. The Companion or Spiritual Guide at the Altar is bound in the middle of the Book of Common Prayer, The Book of Common Prayer continues afterwards from the Psalter or Psalms of David with The New Version of the Psalms of David bound at the back. The Companion or Spiritual Guide at the Altar has an attractive frontispiece of The Communion "This do in remembrance of me For as often as ye eat this Bread, and drink this Cup ye do shew the Lord's death till he come" the full title to The Companion at the Altar reads " (By the King's Authority) The Companion of Spiritual Guide at the Altar containing Prayers, Ejaculations, Meditations, and The order for the Administration of the Lord's Supper: According to the Usage of the Church of England. Directions and Devotions at the Lord's Table, and at Home. After Receiving the Sacrament and An Introductory Discourse explaining the Nature and End of this Sacrament, and the Obligations we under to receive the Lord's Supper".

Tate, Esq, Poet Laureate; Printed for the Company of Stationers, London 1770. Very dark brown leather binding with 5 faux bands and with 6 designs between; 8vo, 248pps. Inside fro…nt page has a small piece torn off on the bottom corner, other front inside blank pages have dust marks and there is a crack on the spine partway up from the bottom; a section at the front has come loose and has been partly pasted back but some of the pps are out slightly out of alignment now - although firmly stuck back in; top of pps 19/20 has been torn off but doesn't affect the reading of the Psalm, bottom of pps 140/142 has been torn off catching a few letters of the Psalm on p142, ditto on pps 180/182, also there is a tear up the part near the spine which has been cut on p180 for c1 & same for c 3 on p182, p226 has a small hole and a small c1/2 tear near bottom, p230 & 232 have small tears at bottom of pps; book has a few pencil notes & ticks; apart from the blemishes noted book is in good condition, but obviously the book has had a lot of wear over its c255 year life to date.

Contemporary smooth grained black morocco. Fore-edges somewhat dusty; a good, clean copy in unrestored period binding. The 'New' English psalter, commonly known…as 'Brady and Tate', was first published in 1696. It replaced the 'Old Version' by Sternhold and Hopkins, and included a number of new metres (among them 8,8,8 and a few 37 long metre renditions) not found in the Old Version or the Scottish Psalter. Nicolas Brady was Chaplain in Ordinary to the King; Nahum Tate (1652-1715), poet laureate, dramatist and adapter of other's plays (including several popular versions of Shakespeare). A good eighteenth century copy in worn but sound contemporary binding. Approximately 8 ¼ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition bruised top and tail, five compartments, worn, JHS in blind stamp to the compartments. Joints good condition solid, worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition gilt title, worn. Page edges good condition very dark. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition cracked, boards showing. Paste downs good condition dark foxing around the edge to the front and back paste down. End papers good condition tanned with some foxing, pencil note to rear end paper. Title good condition tanned with some foxing. Pages good condition tanned with foxing throughout, there are some pencil marks in some of the margins, page 187 has a slight tear at the bottom.
