These two novelettes explore existentialism and morality through vivid narratives: one set in post-war Shanghai, delving into themes of alienation and moral decay, and the other in wartime Hokkaido, addressing the harrowing dilemma of survival and cannibalism.

Translated from the Japanese by Yusaburo Shibuya and Sanfrod Goldstein. 145 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Shigeo Katakura. The Luminous Cave by Jean Phinney. keywords: Asia Japan Literature Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - The two novelettes by contemporary writer Taijun Takeda that are contained in this book were chosen for their overall excellence to be included in our current Library of Japanese Literature series. Both stories are relatively modern, one dealing with an incident of cannibalism in Hokkaido during World War Il and the other about the Japanese who lived in Shanghai following the defeat. This Outcast Generation, according to the translators, c is basically an existentialist novel and it reminds of Camus, but it is of course Japanese in essence. The story tells of the life of a man who as a member of a defeated nation living in a foreign country, feels no. responsibility to anyone but himselfand this only in relation to food and water. Eventually, the hero is given the chance to initiate a change in his aimless life and he acts, for mankind or for love, in committing what is meant to be a Dostoyevskian axe-type murder. Translator Goldstein calls Luminous Moss ' 'a real tour-de-force. I know nothing like it in any literature, though of course the problem of cannibalism has been treated by others. The story is at once a travelogue, an essay, an earnest anti-war document, and a morality play. The narrator of the story goes to Hokkaido and comes across an incident of cannibalism during the war. The conflict ensuing hinges on the question of survival: given the situation of starving to death in a cave in the dead of winter or eating human flesh and surviving, what would a man do? It is this question that so intrigues the narrator that he reconstructs and gives shape to this dilemma by creating at the end of the story a magnificent morality play. inventory #6942.

Qui Jun was a noble orator, women's rights activist, and revolutionary. The title of her biography refers to a line in her death poem, written shortly before her execution: "Autumn wind, autumn rain, they make one die of sorrow." The author, Taijun Takeda, was himself a leftist activist and novelist who was jailed for agitating for a strike. Few of his books have been translated into English.
