Hardcover. First edition (same date on title page and copyright page; no additional printings listed) . Original tan cloth, 253 pp. Hardcover, very good in very good dustjacket. Dustjacket has a 1/8th inch deep strip trimmed off length of lower edge (partial loss of lettering there) , with two approximately 1/4 inch chips on spi…ne portion there, price clipped. Book itself has dusting on top edge of textblock, tape marks on endpapers, two approximately 1x1 inch partially blacked out rubber stamps on front endpapers, a small portion of which is on the side edge of the front flap of the dustjacket, previous owner's signature and brief note (in pencil) , 1/2 inch chip off top edge of half title page, four 1/2 to 1 inch tears on edges of title page and adjoining leaves, paper age tanned, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked; probably never really read. Novel set in Italy during the Fascist era, showing the affects of the Mussolini dictatorship on all socio-economic classes, and the work of the partisan underground in the resistance. Modern first; World War II.

The book also has bumps to the spine ends and cover corners, a small ding to the fore edge of the front cover, rubbing with stains to the covers, a touch of sunning… to the spine, "Property of U.S." stamps to the end pages, and tears to the faces of the dedication and copyright pages. Overall, a Good+ copy.

Buono-ottimo stato di conservazione. Prima RARISSIMA edizione italiana (venne prima stampato negli Stati Uniti durante l'esilio dell'autore) di questo romanzo che consacrò il valor…e letterario dell'anarchico livornese, Ezio Taddei. L'autore ebbe una vita assai avventuroso. Condannato a otto anni, nel 1921, per organizzazione e partecipazione ad attentati con esplosivi (mai riuscito a dimostrare il suo effettivo coinvolgimento nei fatti) quando sta per uscire dal carcere gli vengono dati altri 5 anni di pena per istigazione ad una rivolta in carcere, scontati anche questi. Appena liberato tenta di scappare in Svizzera e vien catturato ed inviato al confino fino al 1936. Riuscito a riparare in america conosce Arthur Miller che in seguito verrà a fargli visita in Italia ma il suo incontro più importante dal punto di vista politico è con Carlo Tresca con la susseguente vicenda inerente l'anarchico Tresca editore del Martello e fra i dirigenti della Mazzini Society. Quando Tresca venne ucciso, Taddei portò avanti un'inchiesta parallela a quella della polizia scoprendo un intreccio tra mafia, politica e forze dell'ordine che lo portò a ricevere minacce e a dover rientrare in Italia. Nel 1945 è di nuovo in Italia e stringe una forte amicizia con Corrado Alvaro, Francesco Jovine e Guido Piovene che scrivono una celebre lettera al presidente Enrico De Nicola sul comportamento degli statunitensi nei confronti dei "sovversivi" italiani e sul caso Tresca, simile lettera viene pubblicata sui giornali provocando enorme interesse. Samuel Putnam, il traduttore americano delle opere di Pirandello, che curò l'edizione in inglese de Il Pino e la Rufola, affermò che questo era il miglior romanzo della letteratura italiana scritto fra il 1920 ed il 1945. PRIMA RARISSIMA EDIZIONE in buono-ottimo stato di conservazione.
