Kennedy's 1980 challenge to incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic presidential nomination, this is very much a book of its political moment rather than a retrospective biography. Levin and Repak e…xamine the Kennedy mystique, his 1962 campaign, seventeen years in the Senate, health insurance, judicial reform, foreign policy and defense, the decline of the Camelot aura, and the 1980 election, concluding with the provocative question of whether a Kennedy presidency would actually make a difference. A contemporary Christian Science Monitor review described the book as concentrating particularly on Kennedy's legislative record and policy positions, while noting the authors' argument that the presumed 'charisma factor' had evaporated during the difficult 1980 campaign. The book was released May 27, 1980, making it a genuine campaign-season document published before the Democratic National Convention. First Edition, First Printing. The copyright page carries the complete Houghton Mifflin number line 'V 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1,' with the '1' present. The jacket photograph, credited on the rear panel to Stan Grossfeld / The Boston Globe, depicts Kennedy at the dedication of the Kennedy Library on October 20, 1979 - a particularly apt image, taken only weeks before Kennedy formally entered the presidential race. Condition: Book - Very Good+. Dust Jacket - Good. Black cloth binding remains square and attractive with bright gilt spine lettering, light rubbing/handling visible to the cloth, and no structural weakness. Pages are clean and well preserved. A small fluorescent bookseller price sticker is present on the front free endpaper. Dust jacket is unclipped but has significant localized edge damage: chips and short tears along the upper edge, most notably at the upper spine/front-joint area and upper-right front corner, together with lesser edge wear, rubbing and soiling. The jacket nevertheless remains substantially complete, with Kennedy's photographic portrait and typography strongly present. Murray B. Levin (1927-1999) was a Boston University political scientist whose scholarship focused on elections, political behavior and American political culture; the jacket identifies earlier works including The Alienated Voter, The Compleat Politician, Kennedy Campaigning, and Political Hysteria in America. T. A. Repak is an investigative reporter who had worked for syndicated columnist Jack Anderson. The book retained some usefulness beyond the election that inspired it: Levin's chapter "Kennedy Campaigning, 1962" was later included among the secondary-source materials assembled for the University of Virginia Miller Center's Edward M. Kennedy Oral History Project.
