In 1775 he was commissioned as colonel of the 2nd New York Regiment of the Continental Army and in March, 1776 colonle of the 1st New York Regiment. He was wounded at Ticonderoga and also served at the Battle of Monmouth. In 1779 he commanded a force of 558 from Fort Stanwix against the Onondaga, who has alligned with the British.
