This set of lecture notes is based on a series of ten lectures given by Professor T. Parthasarathy at Chennai Mathematical Institute. Topics in matrix and bimatrix games, stochastic games (finite, infinite, and undiscounted stochastic games) and cooperative games are covered. The topics include minimax theorem on unit square, a square root game, orderfield property, classes of stochastic games and product solutions for simple games. Most of the work discussed/covered in this set of lectures include those done by Parthasarathy and his collaborators. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. The three plays reveal Indira Parthasarathy's abiding interest in the nature of the human self as multilayered and problematic. Comforting Illusions makes a brilliant use of the mode of the Absurd Theatre to examine the loss of meaning in the most enduring institution in Indian society, namely the family, and especially conjugal relationship. Rain creatively adapts the insights of Freudian psychoanalysis to problematize our naive understanding of kinship relations. Shrouded Bodies, which displays an androgynous imagination to an even greater degree, offers a detached, often witty analysis of the motivations that force men and women into illegal relationships. Indira Parthasarathy everywhere demonstrates his ability to delve into issues of self and society and formulate his perceptions in cool, argumentative intellectual structures. Indira Parthasarathy, pseudonym of Padma Shri (Dr) Ranganathan Parthasarathy (b.1930), is a creative writer, literary and cultural critic and historian who started his career as an academic. Widely acknowledged as one of those who have revolutionized modern Tamil drama, he has so far authored nine full-length plays and seven one-act plays. The best known of these are Mazhai, translated here as Rain, Pasi, translated here as Comforting Illusions, Aurangzeb, a historical play, which won a Tamil Nadu Government Award, Nandan Kathai, a subversive retelling of a Tamil legend about a Dalit saint, and Raamaanujar (1996), a play about the great Vaishnavite saint, which was awarded the K.K. Birla Foundation's Saraswati Samman in 1999. Besides his dramatic output, Indira Parthasarathy has also published sixteen novels, six anthologies of short stories, four anthologies of short novels and a volume of critical essays. He was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel Kuruthi-p-punal, which has been translated into all the major Indian languages, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2004. He is the only Tamil writer to have been honoured with both the awards. He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award last year at The Hindu Literature for Life event. (jacket).…

Devotional poetry in Tamil. 4. St. Sekkizhar s Periya Puranam: the Puranam of Tiru Nalai-p-povar. References. Critical theory and a reading of Nandan Kathai: Hindu culture as a text by C.T. Indra. "Published in 1978 in Tamil, The Legend of Nandan is a superbly contemporary drama about a seventh-century hero in a clash between high-caste Hindus and the suppressed people of a typical Tamil village. "Nandan, a bonded labourer, is deeply discontended with his servile existence, and yearns for a better way of life for himself and his people. His artistic appreciation of the dancing Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram temple leads him to seek and receive a darshan of the deity. The upper-caste Hindus begin to feel threatened by the rise of Nandan, and enlist the help of the learned Vedic Brahmin, who misuses Nandan s piety and deceives him into submitting himself to a fire-bath in front of the Lord, so that he may emerge purified . Thus, Nandan s ambitious ascent from his low birth is effectively cut short. "The story of Nandan can be interpreted as a saga of the suffering of suppressed people everywhere. It deconstructs the original legends of Nandan which are inalienable to Hindu culture, and challenges society s canonization of bhakti and religious fervour. "This play will appeal to students and scholars of Tamil literature, South Asian literature in translation, and Indian theatre, as well as the general reader." (jacket).…
