Includes Author Dedication; Acknowledgments and Preliminary Page Author Note. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. " She was born into the most enviable of circumstances - one of the three beautiful children of charming, successful, beloved parents living at the very center of the most glittering life America had to offer. Who could have imagined that this magical life would shatter, so conclusively, so destructively? In Haywire, the daughter of Leland Hayward and Margaret Sullavan tells the story of her extraordinary family: the aura of glamour and extreme privilege that surrounded her growing up - beauty, talent, money, grace, joy, all in seemingly infinite supply - and the carelessness and emotional extravagance that were all the while invisibly at work. Until, inevitably, there were destroyed marriages, mental breakdown, tragic death; parents and children alike crippled in crucial, sometimes fatal ways. Leland Hayward: he was the most colorful and dynamic of theatrical agents, "the Toscanini of the telephone," making deals day and night for his clients; Garbo, Hemingway, Judy Garland, Billy Wilder, Gregory Peck, Boris Karloff, Lillian Hellman, Dashiell Hammett, Fred Astaire. He was elegant, flamboyant, magnetic -- with a warm, uncomplicated zest for a life charged with success and style. Margaret Sullavan: she was a true star of both Hollywood and Broadway; a superb actress; a spell-casting charmer, beautiful and spirited. "If ever I've known someone who was unique, it was Maggie," said Henry Fonda (they married as kids, got unmarried, almost remarried, raised their families as Best Friends). She loathed Hollywood and hungered for simplicity. Most of all, she was determined to bring up her children properly, privately; she knew what was right -- for them, for Leland, for anyone who came under her spell. And the children: attractive, intelligent, adored; themselves in thrall to the romance of their parents' -- and their own -- lives. Brooke on the cover of Life at 15; Bill into -- and out of -- the best schools in America; exquisite Bridget plunging into the theater, into a happy love affair. Suddenly, Bridget's death at 21 -- suicide? epilepsy? Bill, in and out of Menninger's. Maggie and Leland divorced, miserable apart and impossible together; Maggie rejected by two of her children, hating her work, dying suddenly in a New Haven hotel during pre-Broadway tryouts. What went wrong? What was wrong? With amazing courage and control, Brooke Hyward re-creates her past, and her family's. While, in counterpoint to her narrative, the witnesses -- others who knew and loved the Haywards -- give us their own memories: the Fondas, Jimmy Stewart, the Mankiewiczes, Truman Capote, Diana Vreeland. Haywire takes us into fascinating lives, little by little revealing the disparity between their outer and inner circumstances. Brooke Hayward's story moves and galvanizes the reader -- as a sharing of her own impassioned search for understanding, and as an incomparable portrayal of Hollywood and Broadway in their halcyon days." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Swope, John (jacket photographs); Anthony, Robert (jacket design) (illustrator). …

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: None (as issued). 1st Edition. Signed on the title page by Robert Swope, Jr., the author, not personalized to anyone. 248 pages using nearly 300 previously unpublished photographs of U. S. Navy photographer John Marshall Riddle who spent two tours of duty in the Pacific War from l942 to 1945. Ted Riddle is set apart because 14 years after his passing in 1978, his record of the war, that is, his accumulation of photographs, notes and military papers from the Pacific Theatre, was discovered just as he had left it a half a century ago. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is an album of snapshots taken roughly the mid-1950s and mid- 1960s, depicting a group of cross-dressers united around a place called Casa Susanna. The inhabitants, guests and visitors used it as a weekend headquarters for a regular girls life'. Through these wonderfully intimate shots, Susanna and her friends styled era- specific fashion shows and parties. However, it is in the more private life at Casa Susanna, where the girls clean, cook and play Scrabble, that the insight to a very private club becomes brilliant in its very ordinariness.' Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition quarto hardcover in printed boards. Unpaginated with color + b/w photographic illustrations. Clean, internally unmarked, well bound. Ever so slightly askew, but hardly so and not effecting the integrity of binding or overall fell of the book. Very lightly rubbed at corners, but hardly noticeable, with a bit of heavier rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards. Slight minimal shelfwear elsewhere to extremities, now protected in cut mylar. Photobook edited by Michel Hurst and Robert Swope, the latter who in the early 2000's found a box of photographs at a New York City flea market containing the work of Andrea Susan, official photographer of the weekend retreat Casa Susanna in Jewett, New York - a secret gathering place for cross-dressing men and trans women in the 50's-60's. Consisting of affirming, ordinary candid and portrait photos of visitors to the retreat in feminine attire in the midst of various social activities, the photographs were originally bestowed to Susan's mentor and later discarded before ending up at the flea market. These are early, rare examples of photographs made by and for trans women / cross dressing men for purposes beyond the fetishistic, erotic, and otherwise sensational. The publication of this book would eventually inspire actor, playwright and screenwriter Harvey Fierstein's play Casa Valentina, as well as to encourage some of the former attendees to come forward half a century later with their stories. A documentary about Casa Susanna, directed by Sébastien Lifshitz, was released in September 2022. Notwithstanding a heavy hand from the editors, this is a stunning, touching photobook. Rare and in very good condition.…
