Light brown buckram with spine & cover titles in black, black end sheets; 8vo; 377pp; illustrated with b/w photo frontispiece w/ tissue guard, 7 plates, numerous drawings & b/w photos within text; 2 folding maps at rear. Being the narrative of several journeys in the hinterland of the Somali Coast Protectorate, dating from the beginning of its administration by Great Britain until the present time with descriptive notes on the wild fauna of the country. With plenty of shooting game including elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, kudu and others. "An important work of sport and exploration." (Czech p162) This copy in good condition with the usual darkening of cloth, especially at spine which also has a small repaired snag; hinges starting; ink name & date (98) to half title page; maps present with tears at folds; internally text block and images all in VG condition.

The boards are a little worn, marked and the edges are slightly frayed. On pages 143/144 and 367/368 there is a small piece of the page edge missing, no text has been affected. Internally all pages are accessible, neat, clean and complete, considering the age of the book (1895). The spine has darkened totally. Small repair to the top edge of the spine. Large 8vo (9 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches), pages: xx:386:(2), original tan buckram. Binding dustmarked, spine completely blackened as usual. Overall good. "An excellent game shot, Swayne described his seventeen journeys into Somaliland's interior from 1884 to 1893. He hunted elephant near the Golis Range, Jallo, and the Sobt River in 1887. Five years later, while on reconnaissance near the Abyssinian border, he bagged rhinoceros near Toeli. In 1893, Swayne collected Leopard and oryx while journeying to Harar. Later near the Webbe Sheldeh River, he hunted rhino, lion, leopard and elephant. He also relates an interesting incident in hunting hyena with knife and pistol. In the Golis Range, he successfully stalked trophy kudu. On a second journey to the Webbe Shebleh, he bagged bushbuck, leopard and lion" [Czech].
