Pais was Jewish, and, after the NAZI invasion of Holland, spent World War II evading them. Size: Octavo. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket and illustrations by N. Kolchitsky (illustrator). 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear, to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, but fab retro largely dark blue jacket bright and unsunned. Not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, frontispiece photo of Sputnik partially loose, otherwise internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 287pp. Sputnik One was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was a 58 cm diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4th October 1957. It was visible all around the Earth and its radio pulses were detectable. The surprise success precipitated the American Sputnik crisis and triggered the Space Race, a part of the larger Cold War. The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. Sputnik One burned up on 4th January 1958, as it fell from orbit upon reentering Earth's atmosphere, after travelling about 70 million km and spending 3 months in orbit. This book is a lively, unofficial account of Soviet space technology by Russian popular science writer Karl Alexandrovich Gilzin (1910-?).
