Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Original 1910 first edition of Commander Stuart V. S. C. Messum's classic manual on hydrographic surveying, written for beginners, seamen, and naval personnel. A comprehensive work covering coastal and harbor surveying, soundings, chart construction, navigation, tides, astronomical observations, buoyage, and surveying techniques, illustrated throughout with 262 figures and 22 plates. The work was published as part of Griffin's Scientific Text-Books and became an important early twentieth-century reference for practical hydrographic surveying. Complete with all 22 plates, including the desirable folding color navigation and buoyage charts. These fold-out plates are often missing or damaged, making complete copies increasingly difficult to find. Modern print-on-demand reproductions are readily available, but original 1910 editions with all plates intact are considerably scarcer. Condition Original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding is sound though relaxed, and pages are clean with light age toning. All 22 plates are present, including the folding color plates, which open well and are complete. Moderate rubbing and shelf wear to the cloth, with wear to the spine ends and corners consistent with age. No dust jacket, as issued for many surviving copies. Please examine photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
