Half Leather Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1843. First edition. xvi, 573pp. The Relief Church (or Presbytery of Relief) was a Scottish Presbyterian denomination founded in 1761.[1] In 1847 it united with the United Secession Church to form the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. In relation to the history of the Church of Scotland it is known as the Second Secession: relating to the First Secession of 1733. The author of this history of the Relief Church was Rev .Gavoin Struthers (d.1858) was a minister of Anderston Relief Church (UP from 1847) 1819-1858, and Moderator at the United Presbyterian Church's second synod in 1848. The book is bound in contemporary half leather over marbled paper covered boards with gold titling on a leather label and five thin raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with expected shelf wear on the boards and some scuffing to the leather. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and some staining on page 407. Pages 421 to 432 have been bumped on the bottom edge leaving creases of about 3/4" of the bottom of the page. The endpapers are foxed and a name and date have been written on the front fixed endpaper.
