    Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine condition. First Printing of the First US Edition. Groton, New York : Published by the Compiler, 1889. Small dark spot at one corner of the cover. Otherwise clean, square, tight, and unmarked. Inner hinges are sound. Gold-stamped decorations and lettering are still bright and shiny. No owner's name or bookplate. Frontispiece portrait of the author, with tissue-guard. A collection of poems about the life of the traveling salesman, also known as a Drummer, commercial traveler, or Knight of the Grip. There is also a selection of Civil War poems and miscellaneous pieces, in the chapter "G. A. R. Gems" [Grand Army of the Republic]. Besides Streeter, contributors to this volume are Mrs. Ella Wheeler Wilcox, John DeWitt, C. E. Banks, Lafe Heidell, Robert Lovell, Frank Olive, Joseph De Barth, J. W. Crawford (Capt. Jack), Sherman D. Richardson, John Hay. Also included here is James Whitcomb Riley's poem: The Old Man and Jim, for which Gems from an Old Drummer's Grip is cited in Russo and Russo, A Bibliography of James Whitcomb Riley (p.48). Original green cloth, decorated with gilt image of a grip (salesman's case) within blind-stamped borders. Edges are beveled. Endpapers are decorated in a floral pattern.
