Seller: CHAPTER TWO, Pinetown, KZN, South Africa
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Published on the occasion of Johannesburg's ninetieth birthday. These sketches by Ida Mae Stone (Nos 1 to 62 and A) and her husband Harry Clayton (Nos 63 to 82 and B to C) are reproduced from the original album and pictures loaned by descendants and from two of the originals held in the Africana Museum. Excluding photograhs, there are few early pictures of Johannesburg, and this series of sketches depicts many scenes and buildings of which no other pictorial record is known. The pictures in this book are, wherever the original is dated, arranged in strict chronological order and given consecutive numbers followed by a square brackets to indicate the page number in the original album. All the pictures from the album are reproduced in their natural size, while the measurements are given for those that are not from the album, as they may be slightly reduced to fit the size of this book which is the same height and width as the album. The original captions given by the artists and the later notes, maily, it seems, added by his wife, are given as they appear on the pictures themselves, while on the page opposite to each picture is a modern note by the editor (Anna H Smith - fromer City Librarian and Director of the Africana Museum). DJ is rubbed and frittered along the top edges with a one-inch closed tear close to the front top spine hinge, now in a loose protective plastic overwrap. 208 pages including bibliography and Index to Item numbers of the Pictures. ALL ORDERS DESPATCHED WITH A TRACKING NUMBER. (Klib-NW-EEY-U11).
