The book was occasioned by the death of Patricia Garvan, the young daughter of Francis P. Garvan (then president of the Chemical Foundation), from rheumatic fever; it is dedicated "to the welfare of your children and your children's children," and the frontispiece carries her portrait under the caption "May the memory of lost children urge us on."
