Resp.: Ernst Gottlieb Steudel, Esslingensis. Ernst Gottlieb v. Steudel (=1783-1856), §Oberamtsarzt in Eßlingen in Württemberg, geboren daselbst am 30. Mai 1783, ? ebendort am 12. Mai 1856, hat sich auch als botanischer Schriftsteller einen Namen gemacht. Den ersten Schulunterricht genoß St. in dem Pädagogium seiner Vaterstadt und auf privatem Wege, bezog 1801 die Universität Tübingen, um Medicin und Naturwissenschaften zu studiren und promovirte am 25. September 1805 auf Grund seiner Dissertation: "Observationes quaedam chemicae de acredine nonnullorum vegetabilium." Nach einer Reise in die Schweiz hielt er sich einige Zeit in Wien und Halle auf und kehrte im Novbr. 1806 nach Eßlingen zurück, wo er sich als praktischer Arzt niederließ. Er erhielt bald darauf die Stelle eines Oberamts-Thierarztes und wurde 1828 Oberamtsarzt, welche Stelle er bis zu seinem Tode mit Eifer und Erfolg versah. Die Zeit, welche er von seinem ärztlichen Berufe erübrigen konnte, widmete er der Botanik, welche ihm eine ganze Reihe von Publicationen verdankt. Sein verdienstvollstes Werk ist ein in erster Auflage 1821-24 erschienener "Nomenclator botanicus", in welchem alphabetisch geordnet, die Namen und Synonyma sämmtlicher Pflanzengattungen und -Arten, wie sie seit Linné aufgestellt wurden, sich verzeichnet finden und zwar im ersten Theile die Phanerogamen, im zweiten die Kryptogamen. Zwanzig Jahre später [152] erschien eine zweite Auflage des Buches, aufs neue durchgearbeitet und vermehrt, ebenfalls in 2 Theilen, die sich aber nur auf die Phanerogamen beschränken, von denen nunmehr allein 6722 genera und 78 005 species namentlich aufgezählt sind, mit Angabe der natürlichen Familie, des Vaterlandes, der Synonymik und mit litterarischen Nachweisungen. Dieses für die botanische Nomenclatur so nützliche Werk erhielt erst in dem 1873 und 74 erschienenen Pfeiffer'schen Nomenclator (s. A. D. B. XXV, 643) eine werthvolle Ergänzung. Ein zweites Werk Steudel's: "Synopsis plantarum glumacearum", als Theil einer auf elf Bände berechneten neuen Auflage der species plantarum Linné's, kam 1855 in 2 Heften heraus, deren erstes die Gramineen und deren zweites die Cyperaceen, Juncaceen und verwandte Familien umfaßt. Es zeugt diese Arbeit zwar hinsichtlich des der Arbeit zu Grunde liegenden Materials von großem Fleiße des Herausgebers, hat aber wegen der vielfach unkritischen Behandlung der Umgrenzung der species manche Anfechtung erfahren. Dagegen hat sich St. unbestrittene Verdienste um die Wissenschaft erworben durch die im J. 1825 von ihm, in Gemeinschaft mit dem Eßlinger Stadtpfarrer Prof. Ch. F. Hochstetter ausgegangene Gründung des württembergischen naturhistorischen Reisevereins. Derselbe bezweckte, für Rechnung solcher Pflanzenliebhaber, welche gegen eine entsprechende Quote der Ausbeute durch Einzahlung von Beiträgen oder Zeichnung von Actien sich betheiligten, zunächst weniger bekannte Theile Europa's, sodann auch außereurapäische Länder bereisen zu lassen, um die Kenntniß ihrer Floren in weitere Kreise zu bringen. Die Bestimmung der Pflanzen besorgten St. und Hochstetter, die Vertheilung derselben geschah in der Regel durch die Reisenden selbst. 1826 reisten Franz Fleischer nach Griechenland, Franz Müller nach Istrien und Dalmatien; ein Jahr später der erstere nach Smyrna und Alexandrien, der zweite nach Sardinien. 1828 botanisirten Kurr und Hübener in Norwegen, 1829-31 Endreß in den Pyrenäen und von 1831 an W. Schimper in Algerien, auf Cephalonia, in Aegypten, Arabien und Abessinien. 1839 wurde Walwitsch nach Portugal gesandt. Daneben suchte der Verein durch Kauf und Austausch getrockneter Pflanzen seine Wirksamkeit zu erweitern. So wurden der Reihe nach die .
