Alfred George Stephens (1865-1933), literary critic, editor and publisher, was born on 28 August 1865 at Toowoomba, Queensland, eldest of thirteen children. He was Australia's most outstanding literary critic during the 1890's and the first three decades of the 20th century. Here collected and reprinted for the first time is the best of his literary and social criticism.
