It is played on both the strategic and tactical levels so as to as fully as possible place the entire situation in the hands of the players. In the strategic game, played on a map of the Northwest and Northern states, a set of counters are used to represent the major units and bands involved in the campaign. Each is rated for its movement abilities and its Search or evasion potential. The major objective of the U.S. Army player is to coordinate his forces in such a manner as to be able to locate the Indian forces at will and to bring them to battle in the tactical game. The major objective of the Nez Perce Indian player is to maneuver his forces so as to avoid being trapped by the U.S. Army player, moving into contact only when he wishes to fight tactically and, after crossing to the plains, head into Canada with as few causalities as possible to end the game. Whenever a contact does occur on the strategic map the strategic counters involved are examined to determine their identity and then the surviving tactical counters that compose them are set up in a manner determined by how the contact occurred on one of four tactical maps (which tactical map is determined by the location hex type on the strategic map). After the action is concluded the players go back to the strategic map to continue the play until another contact leads to another action. This is a large game for a magazine, with a strategic map, 4 tactical maps, 1 and a half counter sheets, and a set of rules for both the strategic and tactical games.

The game depicts this conflict at a strategic level, with most operational and tactical details represented by fast and easy-to-play systems, rather than intricate mechanisms. The intent of the game is to provide a broad overview of the historical events while being fun to play. The object of the game for the Japanese player is to control the sea areas around Japan to prevent Russian combatants from bombarding and cutting off supplies to the island nation, and to destroy the naval forces of Russia. The object of the game for the Russian player is to disrupt Japanese sea control, retain sea control around the Russian and Manchurian coastline for as long as possible, and destroy Japanese naval forces. Both players must obtain their objectives by deploying their naval resources into the sea areas on the map, earning victory points at the end of each of six turns for areas under their control, and for opposing units destroyed. SETTING SUN, RISING SUN owes its original inspiration to WAR AT SEA, designed by Jon Edwards and Don Greenwood and published by The Avalon Hill Game Company, a game which covered the war in the Atlantic in World War Two. SETTING SUN, RISING SUN borrows a number of concepts from this earlier game as a starting point, such as area movement, individual capital ships, battle line resolutions, and rolling sixes to hit, and then diverges significantly to reflect the Russo-Japanese War situation. The game includes about 280 counters, a 22"x28" map sheet of the combat areas including charts and tables, and a set of rules to play the game. Design by Stephen Newberg.

Product Description: ROCKETS RED GLARE is a two player game type simulation of the War of 1812 in North America on the strategic and operational levels. The entire war is covered in quarterly turns corresponding to seasons, with strategic level play occurring on a map of the United States East & Gulf coasts, as well as some interior areas and the associated coastal seas. Operational level play is also in quarterly turns and takes place on a map of the Great Lakes border area between the United States and Canada. One player controls the forces of the United States and a second player controls the forces of England and Canada. Each game turn is composed of both a strategic turn, played on the strategic U.S. map, followed by an operational turn, played on the operational Great Lakes map. Every Fall game turn a special inter-turn phase is played after the conclusion of the operational turn to set up events for the upcoming year. ROCKETS RED GLARE is both a naval and a land combat game. The war itself was one of those strange affairs that started due to poor political decisions and ended due to lack of militarily significant results and the slow realization that it had all been a mistake anyway. The long term results, however, were important. The Unitied States ceased to be a breakaway English colony in the eyes of the world, and most particularly England. And Canada was turned permanently away from the path of the American republic, to move slowly down its own course to independence. ROCKETS RED GLARE depicts the military aspects of this key turning point in the history of North America. The game has 255 counters, a 22"x28" map sheet of the combat areas including charts and tables, and a set of rules to play the game.
