Original green cloth, the lightest of spotting to the closed fore edge but an excellent clean copy in a dust wrapper with some repaired tears. Simon Van Der Stel was appointe…d Commander at the Cape of Good Hope in 1679. His manuscript recording his expedition to the Copper Mountains of Namaqualand was lost until rediscovered by the editor in 1922 being part of the Fagel Collection acquired by Trinity College Dublin. Most of the plates illustrated natural history subjects.

In 1685 he led an expedition overland to the north of Table Bay. He reached Namaqualand and made a peaceful pact with the natives. In turn the copper mountain was discovered and a smelting furnace was established almost immediately. His account includes descriptions of the people and natural history of the region.Howgego, S170.
