World War IT was nearly two years old when Prime Minister Churchill of Great Britain, Marshall Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union and President Roosevelt of the United States began their critical correspondence. Starting in the summer of 1941, every letter and every cable was answered. ~OPERATION BARBAROSSA: on June 22, 1941 an army of three million German soldiers, supported by 1,000 tanks, thousands of self~propelled guns, 70,000 vehicles and a massive air armada attacked Russia. ~THE BAITLE OF BRITAIN: At the same time the German Luftwaffe was bombing London around the clock. A handful of courageous RAF fighter pilots were battling the German Air Force over England. It was at this time that Joseph Stalin was asking Churchill for immediate military aid. What is amazing is that by late summer help was on the way. Stalin writes Churchill on September 3, 1941: "Please accept my thanks for the promise to sell the Soviet Union 200 fighter planes in addition to the 200 promised earlier." The planes were delivered. On December 7, 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war. Here is the thinking and the planning that became the Grand Design of the War, each major event vividly portrayed in these letters of the Big Three~letters that describe invasions, exchanges of highly secret information and intelligence reports. It is a book that reads like a novel~except every word was written by Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill, with the exception of hand~delivered position papers. It puts you on the front row of history.
