Of course, there are certain obstacles that make this process of mobility more difficult. People from one culture leave their roots and start a new life in a new culture. As a consequence, they are forced to adapt to and to adopt this new culture to a certain extent. This is a very complex progress that is described by cultural studies. Just like any other experience, acculturation can be dealt with in literature. Literature can serve as a mirror that reflects cultural phenomena, human experiences, events in history etc. Literary studies deal with the interpretation of these depictions (or reflections) in literary works. Since literary and cultural studies can partly deal with the same topics, there are interfaces. The focus of this research paper will be on acculturation theories and their application to Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners with a further focus on the historical background that is intended to provide a better understanding of the acculturation process Selvon's characters make through. It will also be analyzed how Selvon depicts his characters in their acculturation process, whether he uses stereotypes or a differentiated depiction and which problems the characters have to face. It will be shown in how far literature can reflect cultural phenomena and in how far this could be achieved in The Lonely Londoners.

It was… love that kept him moving and developing. It was love that confused him and made him reflect. It was love that shattered him and made him mourn. Yeats's experience with love was rich and fulfilling as well as frustrating and devastating. In order to come to a better understanding of Yeats's love poetry, we need to take a look into his private life: 'Yeats met the fiery revolutionary [Maud Gonne] in 1889. He fell deeply in love with her and would propose to her in 1891, 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1916. Gonne had no use for Yeats's proposals. However, she did have a use for his talents. Gonne would use Yeats for his ability as an orator. Maud Gonne, dragging him at her heels on nationalist agitations, soon found that he was a natural orator and could easily dominate committees. Maud Gonne would continue to turn Yeats proposals down, yet she continued to be the catalyst for the finest love poetry Yeats would ever create. Gonne would once ask for Yeats's help in London, ending a brief but happy love affair with Olivia Shakespear. Sensing divided loyalty, Shakespear would end the affair and it was shortly thereafter that Lady Gregory would save Yeats from a potentially more tragic end, like the poets of the tragic generation' (cf. nadn.navy).Yeats really loved Maud Gonne. She was the love of his life, and still, she would never really react to, let alone return his love. Yeats has experienced the many different facets of love through this continuous interaction between his everlasting true and sincere affection and dedication and her cold and calculating rejection. But although this may be a personal tragedy it also resulted in something positive and beautiful, namely Yeats's love poetry Maud Gonne inspired him to. Yeats managed to deal with all his positive and negative experiences in a productive way and included them into his poetry. Maud Gonne once even said to him that she could not stop rejecting him as he would not write such beautiful poetry about her anymore then. As said, Yeats's perception and concepts of love can be identified in his poetry. Furthermore, we can identify a development of Yeats's depiction of love in his poetry. We can find many different sides of love in Yeats's poems. In some poems, Yeats describes it as an almost divine power. In other poems, he starts doubting whether love is really that fulfilling or not. And in further poems, he even focuses on the dark and destructive sides of love. These different concepts of love will be described in this paper through the analysis of selected poems.

The importance of this issue also became clear for George W. In order to provide a solid basis for the analysis, necessary background information will be presented and connected with the movie. First of all, the director will be presented briefly. Then, general questions and problems concerning organ transplantation in 21 Grams will be discussed and finally more complex issues (decision making, psychological problems and interest groups) will be dealt with.

In each case this centres around her desire to sacrifice herself for Heinrich. Diese Aussage beschreibt wohl am besten aus welcher Perspektive die Meierstochter zu betrachten ist. In der bisherigen Forschung wurde sie eher in einer passiven Situation gesehen. Sie wurde nicht als eigene Handlungsträgering, sondern einzig und allein als Schlüssel zur Heilung Heinrichs [gesehen]: sein Geschick steht zur Debatte, sie wird ausschließlich über ihren Stellenwert in der Entwicklung des Protagonisten definiert . Dass die Meierstochter jedoch eine wesentlich zentralere Rolle spielt, zeigt sich etwa schon durch ihren in Relation zu den anderen Figuren sehr großen Redeanteil. Auch werden ihre Aussagen im Gegensatz zu Heinrichs fast immer in der direkten Rede wiedergegeben. In den folgenden Ausführungen wird die Meierstochter auf der Grundlage des Zitates von Andrea Fiddy betrachtet, nämlich als aktiv handelnde Figur, der eine zentrale Rolle in der Handlung zukommt. Sie versucht sowohl ihre Eltern, den armen Heinrich als auch den Arzt in Salerno in mehreren Reden von ihrem Vorhaben, sich zu opfern, zu überzeugen. Dabei bedient sie sich bestimmter rhetorischer Strategien und theologischer Argumente, um die Zweifel der anderen Figuren aufzuheben, ihren Widerstand zu durchbrechen und somit schließlich ihren Willen durchzusetzen. Im folgenden werden die sieben Reden des Mädchens analysiert (hier sei bewusst der Begriff Rede verwendet, da die Figuren bis auf die Ausnahme des Gesprächs zwischen Heinrich und dem Mädchen nie in Dialogform miteinander sprechen, sondern mittels Reden und Gegenreden). Hierbei stehen die rhetorischen Mittel sowie die theologischen Argumente im Fokus, mit denen das Mädchen ihren Gesprächspartner versucht zu überzeugen. Diese Analyse wird sich im weitesten mit der Gestaltung der Reden beschäftigen, wobei vereinzelt auf die Motive der Meierstochter hingewiesen werden wird. Da dies jedoch nicht Hauptgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist, soll dies auch nur in einem sehr beschränkten Rahmen geschehen.

Dabei könnten die Figuren mit ihren Intrigen und ihrer Verstellung auf den ersten Blick beinahe trivial und stereotyp wirken: der überängstige Vater, der seine Tochter nicht loslassen will; der (scheinbar) gehorsame Diener, der den Auftrag seines Herrn mit aller Kraft erfüllen möchte; der flatterhafte Geliebte, der sich nicht fest binden will; und die verschmähte Geliebte, die ihre Kränkung nicht einfach auf sich sitzen lassen will.Doch betrachtet man die Figuren und ihre Handlungsweisen genauer, findet man eine Komplexität, die auf den ersten Blick vielleicht nicht erkennbar ist. Doch eines Tages wird er - vermutlich aufgrund eines Mangels an Gottesfürchtigkeit - vom Aussatz befallen und forthin von seinem Umfeld gemieden und geächtet. Ein Arzt in Salerno sieht keine Hoffnung für ihn, da das einzige Heilmittel das Herzblut einer Jungfrau sei. Heinrich zieht sich schließlich zu einer Meiersfamilie zurück, die für ihn ein Stück Land bewirtschaftet. Er entwickelt ein inniges Verhältnis zur Tochter dieser Familie, welche sich letztlich dazu entschließt, sich für Heinrich zu opfern. Nach einigen Diskussionen, akzeptieren sowohl Heinrich als auch die Eltern des Mädchens seinen Beschluss und Heinrich reist mit ihm nach Salerno. Dort muss das Mädchen noch den Arzt überzeugen, bevor schließlich die Opferung vorbereitet wird.Hier folgt die Schlüsselszene, auf der auch das Hauptaugenmerk dieser Arbeit liegen soll. Der Arzt zieht sich mit dem Mädchen in ein Zimmer zurück und bindet sie dort nackt auf einen Tisch. Um sicher zu gehen, dass die Operation gut verläuft, beschließt er sein Messer noch einmal mit einem Wetzstein zu schärfen. Heinrich hört das Wetzgeräusch, blickt durch ein Loch in der Wand und sieht die Meierstochter nackt und an den Tisch gebunden und empfindet ihren Körper als sehr schön. Dieser Anblick löst in ihm einen plötzlichen Sinneswandel, eine starke innere Reflexion aus. Deshalb wurde hier keine Sekundärliteratur verwendet (auch wenn dies nicht zwingend vorgeschrieben war). , Abstract: Heinrich von Kleist verwendet in seinen Erzählungen relativ viele weibliche Figuren, von denen jede ganz individuelle Charaktermerkmale aufweist und eine mehr oder weniger zentrale Rolle in der jeweiligen Erzählung einnimmt. Es lässt sich schon vorwegnehmen, dass Kleist keineswegs stereotype weibliche Charaktere einsetzt, sondern dass all diese Protagonistinnen und weiblichen Nebenfiguren ein hohes Maß an Komplexität aufweisen. Nicht zuletzt scheinen sie so unergründlich zu sein, da Kleist die Innenwelt seiner Charaktere kaum offenbart. Dennoch möchte ich in dieser Arbeit versuchen, das Bild der Frau in Kleists Erzählungen zu entschlüsseln und auf anschauliche Art und Weise darzustellen. Ich werde einzelne Cha-raktere aufgrund von Parallelen zwischen ihnen bestimmten Archetypen zuordnen. Hierbei wird sich zeigen, dass diese Charaktere trotz ihrer Komplexität zwar vielleicht keinem starren Muster folgen, aber dennoch auf dem Hintergrund eines bestimmten Frauenbildes, das Kleist bewusst oder unbewusst als Basis für seine weiblichen Charaktere benutzt, dargestellt werden. In meinen Ausführungen werde ich die folgenden Charaktere aus Kleists Erzählungen, denen jeweils eine Abkürzung für das Zitieren zugeordnet wird (siehe auch Bibliographie), analysieren. Aufgrund des beschränkten Umfangs dieser Arbeit, können leider nicht alle Charaktere berücksichtigt werden. Diese Arbeit versteht sich als Versuch, diese strittigen Fragen zu 'Der arme Heinrich' und 'Gregorius' zu beantworten und die Probleme bei der Interpretation zu identifizieren und zu lösen.Zunächst wird ein methodischer Ansatz erarbeitet, der sich für die Analyse der beiden Texte eignet. Dabei werden Auffassungen und Denkmodelle zu Zeit und Entwicklung im Mittelalter betrachtet und danach wird entschieden, welche Aspekte sich für die Analyse der Texte eignen.Im Hauptteil dieser Arbeit werden die Störungen in den beiden Werken in fünf Bereichen der Ordnung genauer betrachtet: göttliche Ordnung, feudale Ordnung, Familienordnung, Geschlechterordnung, Ordnung der Sexualität. In jedem Bereich wird gezeigt, welche Arten von Störungen vorgefunden und wie diese Störungen wieder aufgelöst werden, sodass schließlich die Ordnung wiederhergestellt wird. It was love that kept him moving and developing. It was love that confused him and made him reflect. It was love that shattered him and made him mourn. Yeats's experience with love was rich and fulfilling as well as frustrating and devastating. In order to come to a better understanding of Yeats's love poetry, we need to take a look into his private life: 'Yeats met the fiery revolutionary [Maud Gonne] in 1889. He fell deeply in love with her and would propose to her in 1891, 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1916. Gonne had no use for Yeats's proposals. However, she did have a use for his talents. Gonne would use Yeats for his ability as an orator. Maud Gonne, dragging him at her heels on nationalist agitations, soon found that he was a natural orator and could easily dominate committees. Maud Gonne would continue to turn Yeats proposals down, yet she continued to be the catalyst for the finest love poetry Yeats would ever create. Gonne would once ask for Yeats's help in London, ending a brief but happy love affair with Olivia Shakespear. Sensing divided loyalty, Shakespear would end the affair and it was shortly thereafter that Lady Gregory would save Yeats from a potentially more tragic end, like the poets of the tragic generation' (cf. nadn.navy).Yeats really loved Maud Gonne. She was the love of his life, and still, she would never really react to, let alone return his love. Yeats has experienced the many different facets of love through this continuous interaction between his everlasting true and sincere affection and dedication and her cold and calculating rejection. But although this may be a personal tragedy it also resulted in something positive and beautiful, namely Yeats's love poetry Maud Gonne inspired him to. Yeats managed to deal with all his positive and negative experiences in a productive way and included them into his poetry. Maud Gonne once even said to him that she could not stop rejecting him as he would not write such beautiful poetry about her anymore then. As said, Yeats's perception and concepts of love can be identified in his poetry. Furthermore, we can identify a development of Yeats's depiction of love in his poetry. We can find many different sides of love in Yeats's poems. In some poems, Yeats describes it as an almost divine power. In other poems, he starts doubting whether love is really that fulfilling or not. And in further poems, he even focuses on the dark and destructive sides of love. The focus of this research paper will be on acculturation theories and their application to Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners with a further focus on the historical background that is intended to provide a better understanding of the acculturation process Selvon's characters make through. It will also be analyzed how Selvon depicts his characters in their acculturation process, whether he uses stereotypes or a differentiated depiction and which problems the characters have to face.
