Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Tradition tells us that when Fay Templeton sang "Yesterdays" on the opening night of Roberts (November 18, 1933), there was not a dry eye in the house. Legend tells us that when Ethel Griffies sang "Only for Americans" on the opening night of Miss Liberty (July 15,1949), she permanentl…y upstaged Irving Berlin, Robert E. Sherwood, Emma Lazarus, and all the other stars, offstage and on, who helped create that very expensive show. Brooks Atkinson, less lachrymose than tradition, was choked up enough to write in his New York Times review of Roberta, "Theatre goers are sentimental folk, praise be to God," and to go on to say of Templeton that "it is hard to know whether she or the audience is more deeply moved." Fay Templeton was only in her late sixties when Roberta opened, but her years in show business and her great size (by 1933, she weighed 250 pounds and had to play most of Roberta sitting down) made her a monument of America?s great theatrical past.Through their tears the audience presumably saw her as some kind of Barbarossa risen from her nostalgia cave, to unify Broadway past and present. In fact, it was not a return; she had never really been away. Fay Templeton was one of those stars who go in and out of retirement the way railroads go in and out of bankruptcy court. After stirring up a scandal in London in the 1880s - by dressing too skimpily and singing "I Like It, I Do" with too naughty an intonation - she left the stage only to emerge in the 1890s, when she was often compared with her friend Lillian Russell, as a headliner at the Weber and Fields Music Hall. A decade later, George M. Cohan wrote Forty-Five Minutes from Broadway expressly for her, and in the year I was born she was playing the Palace in an all-star line-up of old timers. Two years before Roberta opened, she was singing - and not for the first time - "Poor Little Butterfly" in the Civic Light Opera production of H.M.S. Pinafore. Ethel Griffies was never a star as Fay Templeton was. She was simply a remarkably efficient English character actress, constantly busy on stage, in England and America, and in films. American moviegoers will remember her, tight-lipped, sharp-faced, starchily softhearted, doing housekeeperly things in the background of movies like Anna Karenina. This is a large book and will require extra postage. The top corners are bumped, and there is a slight tear to the top of the spine. All orders shipped protected in a box. Photographs (illustrator). Book.
