Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Nice undated (circa 1940s) hardcover in dark red cloth with dulled but legible gilt titles. No names, tears or soil. Illustrated with 8 b/w plates by Whitmore. 181 pp. Original brown/red on grey illustrated dust wrapper in new mylar chipped and w/tape stains. The best of Irish foxhunting and English steeplechasing including a chapter on the Galway Blazers. Here is an unusually attractive book of sporting experiences - many of them of life in the fox-hunting West of Ireland. Its writer is very much at home with hounds and horses, he has an eye and ear for the sights and sounds of the countryside, and he knows the value of words. Whether it is hunting or racing that he describes - a ride with the hounds at dawn, an opening meet, taking a toss, a day with the Galway Blazers or the Bray Harriers, or the thrills of Fairyhouse or Aintree - he writes with first-hand knowledge and with a zest that will stir the most lethargic reader.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good +. First Edition. Gift quality first edition 1951 hardcover in red cloth covered boards showing bumped spine ends & fairly sharp tips. Christmas gift ded on lightly foxed fep, no other writing, no tears or soil in the crisp, tight 188pp text with foxed edges of page block. Un-clipped, un-priced facsimile dust wrapper with color illustration on frt panel has a few repaired chips including one that took half of the title from spine, but book still displays well in new mylar. This popular Irish author takes the reader off the beaten track. There are descriptions of good hunts with famous packs, and a delightful account of a drag -hunt with some sporting foot-harriers in the hills of county Cavan, but the author is a true rambler and takes you by many an unknown Irish lane. The tempo of the writing follows the sport; a fast burst with the famous United Hunt from Condronstown Covert, easing to a slow hunt with the sporting Sean Peels.
