Some wear to extremities and scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Signed letter from editor to Lord Broughton attached by sealing wax to first free endpaper. A collection mainly of letters, written 1785-1856 by William Pitt the Younger, Edmund Burke, Sir Robert Peel, the Duke of Wellington, Lord Macaulay and others. Philip Henry Stanhope (1805-75) a Tory MP, 1830-52 holding minor offices, was created Earl Stanhope, 1855. He is chiefly known for his cultural and historical writings. Elected FRS in 1827, he played a role in the passing of the Literary and Copyright Act of 1842, the founding of the National Portrait Gallery, 1856 and the establishment of the Historical Manuscripts Commission,1869. He was President of the Society of Antiquaries from 1846. The enclosed letter from Stanhope to Lord Broughton (John Hobhouse, 1786-1869 and Whig MP 1820-51, when created 1st Baron Broughton) draws attention to the views of the Duke of Wellington on the Duke of Marlborough (p.97-102).
