Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover. Dark blue cloth boards with blind stamped design on front and gold lettering and design on spine. 283 pages. Title page dated 1851. This copy is in good condition. Edges gilt. Boards are worn at edges. Corners bumped. Binding is tight but lightly shelfcocked. Binding is beginning to loosen at gutters but is still firmly attached. Pages are toned with age and have some foxing. Some writing in pencil and ink on front free endpapers. Overall a handsome copy. 20 engravings by Clarkson Stanfield.

Red morocco elaborately bordered in blind with gilt decorations, gilt titles on spine, all edges gilt.

Full red morocco boards with blind debossed borders and central wreath motif stamped in gilt. Flat spine with gilt lettering. All edges gilt. , Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793 ? 1867) was an English artist best known for his large-scale paintings of marine art and landscapes. A former sailor he became celebrated for his Romantic seascapes. Like his friend and colleague David Roberts he initially achieved recognition for his role as a scenic designer working at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane during the Regency era. Stanfield is noted for his close friendship with fellow artists of the Royal Academy l Roberts, Edwin Landseer and Daniel Maclise as well as the writer Charles Dickens, with whom he often collaborated. He was the father of the painter George Clarkson Stanfield and the composer Francis Stanfield. He illustrated Heath's Picturesque Annuals for the years 1832?1834, and in 1838 published a collection of lithographic views on the Rhine, Moselle and Meuse; forty subjects from both sides of the English Channel were also steel-engraved under the title of Stanfield's Coast Scenery (1836). Among literary works for which he provided illustrations were Captain Marryat's The Pirate and the Three Cutters (1836), Poor Jack (1840) and the lives and works of Lord Byron, George Crabbe, and Samuel Johnson, mainly in editions by John Murray. , Size : 8vo.
