Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. First edition of this scarce privately printed missionary travel narrative describing an extensive journey through the Middle East and the Holy Land shortly after the First World War. The author visits Lebanon, Baalbek, Damascus, Nazareth, Galilee, Bet…hlehem, Jerusalem, Calvary, Zion, Samaria, Jericho, the Plain of Esdraelon, and numerous other historic Biblical locations. Illustrated throughout with photographic plates depicting important religious and archaeological sites. Published during the early years of the British and French Mandates, the work captures the Near East during a period of enormous political and cultural transition following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. This copy possesses exceptional historical appeal due to its contemporary presentation inscription from Hangchow (modern Hangzhou), China, dated September 1923. The inscription strongly suggests the book circulated within the American missionary community in China shortly after publication. Even more desirable is the survival of several original missionary inserts, including material relating to Dr. John Leighton Stuart, the noted missionary, educator, president of Yenching University, and later the first United States Ambassador to China after World War II. Missionary travel books frequently lose their original inserts over the decades; retaining these pieces greatly enhances both the historical context and collectible appeal of the volume. A scarce work combining travel, missionary history, Holy Land studies, and early twentieth-century American religious history. Provenance Presentation inscription: "To Mr. Austin from Miss Wilson, Hangchow, China, Sept. 1923." Retains original missionary ephemera associated with early twentieth-century Protestant missionary work, including material relating to Dr. John L. Stuart and the American Bible Society. Contents Illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographic plates. Chapters include: Lebanon Baalbek Damascus Galilee Nazareth Bethlehem Jerusalem Calvary Zion Jericho Samaria Esdraelon Holy Sepulchre and other Biblical sites. Condition Very Good. No Dust Jacket. Original maroon publisher's cloth remains attractive with bright gilt lettering on the front board and spine. Light rubbing and scattered handling marks to the cloth, with minor bumping at the extremities. Binding square and solid with secure hinges and sound text block. Interior is clean overall with scattered light foxing throughout, typical for the paper stock of the period. Numerous black-and-white photographic illustrations remain crisp and complete. An especially desirable copy featuring a contemporary presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Austin from Miss Wilson Hangchow, China Sept. 1923." Also retaining several pieces of original missionary ephemera, including: Dr. J. L. Stuart educational order card American Bible Society donation card The Monthly Messenger missionary bulletin (February 1926) An unusually complete and historically interesting copy.
