Mounted Photographs. Condition: Very Good Plus. Both photos are signed on the mount by the photographer "James V. Sproat" in black ink. Two gelatin silver prints of Indigenous elders, possibly near Chilliwack, in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, c. 1950/60's. Prints measure 9.5 x 7.5" wide and are mounted onto 13.5 x 10.5" wide card stock. Rubber stamp verso "James V. Sproat / Photographer / Ph. 792-1645, Chilliwack, B.C." Card mounts are toned and slightly soiled, images are fine, with the gentleman having a thin, but faint, arch-shaped diffusion of tone to the emulsion across his forehead. Barely noticeable, but it is there. Sproat worked in the far north where he photographed the Indigenous people of Frobisher Bay and Cape Dorset before moving to live and work in Chilliwack until his death in 2007. Given that his rubber stamp on these works gives his address as Chilliwack, we infer that these images date from his time there. Ref.
