Springarn a liberal Jewish professor was fired in 1911 went on to become a major activist in the NAACP and worked closely with W.E.B. Du Bois.

In response to a request to present a lecture, Springarn refuses and recommends Lewis Mumf…ord. Included is a file copy of the letter sent which elicited this response. Springarn was a WWI veteran; white leader in the NAACP; established the Springarn Medal; professor (1899-1911) of comparative literature at Columbia; founder (1919) of the publishing firm of Harcourt, Brace and Company.
