Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 3rd Edition. MacMillan Company; Toronto; 1969. Hard Cover. Book condition: Very Good. Dust jacket condition: Good. Stated "Third Edition, Seventh Printing, 1969" with no number line. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket. 9-1/2" tall, 1511 numbered pages includes "Table of Authors", "Bibliography" and "Index". This book is in very good condition: the exterior is square, very clean, free of edge dings and with very lightly bumped but otherwise undamaged head of spine; the spine has no concave valley running the entire length which might be expected in such a thick volume; hinges are strong and not damaged in any fashion. Except for an inked name/date/city on the back of the FFEP, the interior is perfectly clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and any sort of paper damage; RFEP has "waves" in the paper at the hinge, a manufacturing error that does not weaken the hinge. Not remaindered or ex-library but likely a Book Club edition due to a "slug" on the rear panel. The dust jacket is intact and is clean and free of scratches, scrapes, and chipping; it has light wear along the rear fold at at the head of the spine as well as severe fading to the spine (see photo). But worse: it has masking tape on the back side--along upper and lower edges, at both folds and on the entire spine; this tape has not harmed the binding and has caused no real visible effect on the jacket, but it has made the jacket noticeably more stiff. The jacket is now in a mylar cover. An excellent history, with these chapters: The Colonies / The Republic / The Democracy / Literary Fulfillment / Crisis / Expansion / The Sections / The Continental Nation / The United States / A World Literature / Postscript: Mid-Century and After.
